Hyacinths for the Soul

Welcome to my Blog! I'm NANCY SCHAFFER now, but once upon a long time ago I was NANCY ESPINOZA. Whatever name you know me by, I'm glad you stopped by. Sit down, stay awhile, and leave a comment somewhere so I know you were here.

To me every hour of the light and the dark is a miracle.
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle.

If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft,
And from thy slender store two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and with the dole
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul.

About Me

My Photo
Nancy Schaffer
Berlin, Maryland, United States
I am so normal it's sickening. I can't think of anything unique and exciting about me. Unless you count my wings, which are so hard to hide under T-shirts during the summer. The wings are the reason why I don't like to wear swimsuits. I always feel like people are staring at me, and I really would rather believe it's the wings--not my thighs.

THINGS I LIKE

  • * I love amusement parks, playgrounds, and toy stores – These are great places to watch people and to play. But wherever I go I try to be playful. Anything is fun, if you have the right attitude. Well, almost anything. Emergency rooms aren't fun.
  • * Drowsy babies, fun socks, pillows, a soft cozy afghan and hot chocolate on a cold day, candles, setting the alarm on mornings I don't have to get up just so I can have the pleasure of turning it off and going back to sleep, air conditioning, feeding seagulls (I know they're like flying rats, but they'll eat anything and they seem to love the attention), going barefoot, breaking boards in karate class
  • * Favorite Books: Wuthering Heights. Jayne Eyre. Winnie the Pooh. Black Beauty. James Patterson novels about beautiful flying children. Self-help books. I also like scary novels, but I have to read the first and last chapters, then if the end isn't too creepy, I'll read the middle too.
  • * I love noisy crowds and quiet times together; grilled cheese sandwiches and fancy restaurants; experiencing new places and coming home again; the satisfaction of working hard and the pleasure of play; a good laugh and every now and then, a good cry.
  • * I've always loved and believed in magic. I don't mean hocus pocus or wizards and witches in the woods. I mean the magic that happens every day.
  • * Hyacinths, tulips, daffodils, roses, lilacs, and violets

THINGS I DON'T LIKE

  • * I don't like when I have to buy a new toothbrush. The selection is mind-numbing! Decisions, decisions, decisions...
  • * I really don't like spilling the ice that I want to eat when I finished drinking my 32-oz Diet Coke. Especially when I’m driving, and the ice dumps in my lap. I have to get out of the car some time, and I know that when I do no one is thinking, “Look at her pants! She must have spilled 20 ounces of ice while she was driving!”
  • * I hate when an experiment backfires. Like when I tried self-tanning lotion on half my body to see if it really works. (It does.) It took a lot of time and trial-and-error to balance my left and right side. (Note to self: Next time don't buy the cheap stuff. The only thing worse than being half-tan is being half-orange!)
A genuinely happy person is someone whose "Things I Like" list is much longer than her "Things I Don't Like" list!
